This mixtape was released on February 4th in 2010. I disliked the first I AM JUST A RAPPER mixtape, so I’m expecting this to be pretty bad as well. I’m sure it’ll be better than Poindexter tho. I can already tell that this is probably just gonna be more of the same, but it’s pretty short just like the first one, so if it’s trash I won’t have to suffer too long. He’s rapping over Indie Rock songs again. Alright, here we go.
Donald McKinley Glover Jr. (born September 25, 1983) is an American actor, comedian, singer, writer, producer, director, rapper, songwriter, and DJ. He performs music under the stage name Childish Gambino and as a DJ. Glover described them as a joint project and the 'first concept mixtape ever' that continues the story. Track 1: The Real (Prod. Derek Miller)
Gambino’s rapping over a song by Sleigh Bells called Infinity Guitars on this track. Oh fuck… I can’t stand this beat. Nobody should be surprised by that tho because I don’t like guitars. Gambino’s killin’ this shit tho. Goddamn. He’s goin’ the fuck in. I mean, yeah the content is mad childish but that’s to be expected from his pre-Because The Internet work. His flow is super aggressive. Wow. I’m honestly shocked by how much better this is than anything on the first I AM JUST A RAPPER tape. I mean, I still wouldn’t come back to this because I can’t stand the beat, but everything else about this song is dope to me. 3/5
Track 2: Get It (Prod. Yeasayer)
This song is performed over Tightrope by Yeasayer. I’m not really feelin’ this beat, but it’s way better than the previous one. I just listened to the whole song. It’s decent. I liked Gambino’s verse, but this wasn’t enjoyable at all sonically. Gambino rapping over a Yeasayer’s vocals just sounds messy. This is still WAAY better than anything on the previous two tapes tho. 3/5
Track 3: Different Feat. DC Pierson (Prod. Washed Out)
This song is performed over Feel It All Around by Washed Out. Why. Why the fuck is DC Pierson here? This beat is dope af. I’m not really feelin’ DC Pierson’s verse tho. Hopefully Gambino kills this shit. I can cut DC Pierson’s verse out with GarageBand easily. Yup. Gambino’s verse was dope. You know what? I think I’m gonna go easy on this track. This is the best song I’ve heard since I listened to that first Sick Boi tape. I love the beat, and Gambino’s verse was dope. DC’s verse wasn’t that good to me, but it’s tolerable. This is dope to me. 4/5

Track 4: What The F Are You (Prod. The Knife & Mt. Sims)
This song is performed over Colouring Of Pigeons by The Knife. This beat is cool I guess. Donald’s goin’ the fuck in right now. This the second time he’s mentioned an old bully that he had named Vincent. That’s cool to me. I don’t know why. I feel like I’ve never heard a rapper rap about getting bullied before. “I always thought these new clothes were the potion / ‘Cause I never felt that good in my own skin / It’s probably ’cause I’m the only black kid in my school / And when I meet another black kid they tell me I’m a fool.” Damn… Is this the most relatable song I’ve ever heard? Not enough people talk about shit like this in their music. Wow. I’m honestly shocked by how much better this mixtape is than the first IAJAR. This was released only a month after that tape; how is it possible for him to have improved this much? I guess the main problem was the production. The song just ended. It… It was dope af. Finally… I mean, I know I gave I’m A Winner from Sick Boi a 5 but goddamn. I feel like it’s been forever since then. I don’t know if most people will like this song as much as I did. This shit was just super relatable for me. Everything about this track, even down to the title just feels like it came straight from my life. I’ve literally had people ask me “What are you” because they can’t label me as white or black or Indian or Latino. I love this song. This is dope af to me. 5/5
Track 5: Both Hands (Prod. St. Vincent)
This song is performed over Black Rainbow by St. Vincent. I’ve never listened to St. Vincent’s music, but I loved her work on that Maniac song by Kid Cudi. It’s starting now. This beat is dope. The first verse was dope. I can’t believe I’m actually enjoying this mixtape. I’m so happy. Oh shit… He fucking murdered that second verse. I love how the instrumental got more aggressive. Holy fucking shit… He seriously spazzed on this shit. Goddamn. Lmao. Wow. I definitely fuck with this shit. It’s gonna be hard to choose a favorite song. This is dope af. 5/5

This song is performed over Warm Heart Of Africa by The Very Best. I’m not really feelin’ this beat. It’s decent tho. I just listened to the whole song. Meh. It’s not really bad, but I wouldn’t ever have the desire to play this shit again. Gambino’s verse didn’t really do much for me to be honest. The tracks’ only a minute and 34 seconds long anyway. It’s alright I guess. 3/5
Track 7: Nowhere To Go (Prod. Run DMT)
This song is performed over Disaster Babe by Run DMT. The beat’s decent I guess. The hook’s alright. What the fuck? That was it? I just listened to the whole song… This is the definition of filler. There’s only one verse and it’s literally only 6 bars. Why the fuck was this even here? Nah. I’m not feelin’ this one. This is wack to me. 2/5
Track 8: (?) [Prod. Just Blaze]
This song has one of the greatest beats of all time. This is a remix of Exhibit C by [one of] my favorite rapper[s], Jay Electronica. I guess it kinda makes sense; the Jay Electronica influence is pretty obvious. He’s rapping over other peoples songs—sometimes without percussion—just like how Jay Elec rapped over Jon Brion’s soundtrack for Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind. What the hell? He’s spittin’ the same verse from What The F Are You. Why… Why is this song here? I mean, I like the verse, but goddamn. I didn’t need it over this beat. I’m not really feelin’ this song. I love the verse and I love the beat, but not on this song. This song just makes me wanna listen to What The F Are You & Exhibit C. This is wack to me. 2/5

This is easily the best project Gambino had released up to this point, but I still don’t feel comfortable calling it a good mixtape. It’s decent. I really think the reason that this is so much better than IAJAR 1 is because he just chose better songs to rap over. That’s really it. Some of the tracks on here were really unnecessary, particularly the last two tracks. This would’ve been a pretty good mixtape without those songs. That’s pretty much all I have to say. I’m just glad I got these shitty pre-Culdesac mixtapes out the way, and that I can finally get to the good stuff now.
